Ram Ki Paidi — the stepped embankment on the holy Saryu river — is where Ayodhya's soul breathes. Every evening at 7 PM, a spectacular aarti (prayer ceremony) transforms these ghats: dozens of priests waving fire torches, the river shimmering with hundreds of diyas, and devotional chants filling the air. According to scriptures, the Saryu river flows directly from Lord Vishnu's feet, making a holy dip here extraordinarily auspicious. The ghats light up beautifully at night — an Instagram-worthy sight that will stay with you forever.
Ram Ki Paidi's history is as old as Ayodhya itself. Ramayana mentions the Saryu ghats as the site of Ram's coronation bath and his final jal samadhi (aquatic departure to Vaikuntha). Emperor Vikramaditya extensively renovated these ghats in antiquity. For centuries, the ghats were the center of Ayodhya's social and spiritual life. The modern Ram Ki Paidi was substantially rebuilt under the Ayodhya Development Project (2017–2024), with elegant stepped embankments, LED lighting, and tourist facilities. The Saryu Aarti was formalized in 2018 and has since become one of Ayodhya's most visited evening attractions.
The Saryu is among Hinduism's most sacred rivers. The Skanda Purana states Saryu originates from the feet of Lord Vishnu himself. A single holy dip washes away sins of seven past lives and grants Moksha. Most significantly: Lord Ram himself took 'Jal Samadhi' (entered the river permanently) at the conclusion of his earthly incarnation, making this river an embodiment of divine grace. On Kartik Purnima (full moon of Oct–Nov), lakhs of oil lamps are floated here, creating a celestial vision that devotees say mirrors Diwali in heaven.
