Sarnath is where it all began for Buddhism. In 528 BCE, just weeks after attaining Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, Buddha traveled to Sarnath to deliver his first discourse (Dhamma Chakra Pravartana) to five disciples. This single sermon set the Wheel of Dharma in motion — and Buddhism was born.
In 528 BCE, Buddha delivered the Dharmachakra Pravartana Sutra here — Buddhism's founding sermon. Emperor Ashoka visited in the 3rd century BCE and erected massive stupas, monasteries, and the famous Lion Capital pillar. The site flourished as a Buddhist center until Mohammed Ghori's destructive raid in 1194 CE. British ASI excavations in 1905-07 unearthed the remarkable ruins. Ashoka's Lion Capital from Sarnath was adopted as India's National Emblem in 1950.
Sarnath is one of Buddhism's four holiest sites (along with Bodh Gaya, Kushinagar, and Lumbini). For Buddhist pilgrims worldwide, visiting Sarnath is equivalent to receiving Buddha's blessings directly. The ground at Sarnath is considered charged with the Buddha's energy — meditating near the Dhamek Stupa is believed to dramatically accelerate one's spiritual progress. Even for non-Buddhists, the profound peace that pervades this ancient site is immediately felt.
