The Triveni Sangam is the sacred confluence of three rivers — the Ganga (holy), the Yamuna (yamuna) and the invisible Saraswati (believed to flow underground). This is the most sacred bathing spot in Hinduism and the venue of Kumbh Mela, the world's largest human gathering. A dawn boat ride to the confluence, with the mist rising off the water as the sun rises, is an experience that touches the soul.
The Triveni Sangam is mentioned as 'Prayaga' in the Rigveda and Mahabharata, making it one of the most documented sacred sites in ancient Indian literature. Emperor Ashoka (268-232 BCE) erected inscribed pillars here. Akbar built the massive Allahabad Fort here in 1583 to control this strategically important confluence. Kumbh Mela has been held here for over 2,000 years. The 2013 Maha Kumbh attracted over 120 million people; the 2019 Ardh Kumbh attracted over 240 million — the largest peaceful gathering in human history.
The Sangam is called 'Tirth Raj' — the King of all Pilgrimage sites. Ancient texts state: 'Prayage Madhavo Devah' — at Prayag, Madhav (Vishnu) is present as God himself. A holy dip at Sangam washes away all sins and grants Moksha. During Maha Kumbh, bathing here is considered equivalent to performing 100 Ashwamedha Yagnas (grand fire sacrifices). Brahma ji himself performed the first Yagna here after creation, making it the most sanctified site in all three worlds. The invisible Saraswati flows underground and meets the Ganga-Yamuna here — bathing in all three rivers simultaneously is considered supremely auspicious.
